Audio is the most prominent of our senses. It has been the primary input organ since humanity, with the first God conceived as a sound or vibration rather than portraiture. Before the advent of writing, receiving through listening was given much more importance than sight. The world has also been divided with the Europeans being conduits for the “Seeing is believing" theory where Africans believed otherwise.
In our global contemporary times, the new soundscape has been an intersection of industrialization, cross pollinating cultures and evolving nature. This thesis is an opportunistic exploration into re establishing the importance of the sonic medium in a visual world, prioritizing the aural as an equal to the visual. This is done through design interventions that re imagine experiences and products to make people more ‘sound’.
My primary explorations started with investigations and interventions into and for the stagnated state of music education in schools. The motivation being that if students are not exposed to the fascinating world of sound from the ground up, it will always remain a secondary medium to pursue in any given profession. And there is no better way to engage than music.
Transformations indicated in a systems map moving from the current state of music education to a desired state, derived through research
Organized a co creation workshop to identify, address and generate problems, current systems and ideas respectively by bringing a group of relevant stakeholders together
A low barrier of entry music making application based on the concept of synesthesia, by tapping on the opportunistic avenue of current smartphone engagement practices among high school students
Plink is a handheld Kalimba (thumb piano) that serves as an entry point to music education, targeted to younger children as an object to occupy attention and engagement through a vibrant form
Clairaudience is the ability or faculty to actually 'listen'. It is a listening exercise in the form of a sound walk to be interleaved within the student's current curriculum.Facilitated by any instructor using a toolkit
The Chanter is an object of provocation to be used against public school shootings in the United States. It is a musical instrument(Sheng) made to look like a chain gun to instigate targeted stakeholders to take action
