Rise is a tool to counter procrastination. It consists of an online medium in the form of an application which helps one cultivate and persevere healthy habits through various mechanisms.
The application is based on elaborate research on habit development and benefits complemented with observations from personal experience and awareness. The same has been translated into a digital form among other contributions to enhance the experience and make it more engaging and effective.
Triggers are proponents for developing habits, in addition to the ones based on studies, I have added environment design from a personal tested and tried method.
Environment design encourages the user to setup all the objects needed to start or perform an activity, a clear example being, using the assistive mat to arrange all the objects needed to exercise, some time prior to the activity which eliminates the cognitive load and decision changing terms, when the activity is supposed to be performed, this can be highly effective in many cases.
The medium also includes forums for people to talk about their problems and gain inspiration from live sources among other people using the application.
The chain command encourages the user to mark all the days one completes a task and rewards them with points to use as deemed suitable.
Another feature enables the user to record messages in any medium, the application will send intermittent notifications to the user, encouraging them to strive harder and not give up. Self motivation combined with self awareness is key.
The setup I use the night before I have to exercise the next day, inspiration for the assistive mats
The Tangible Medium
Laser etched on felt, for convenient utility and storage. These assistive mats helps users setup arrangements for activities they want to ensue, habits they need to develop.
Getting out of bed can be strenuous enough for some, the faster one gets out of the house to exercise the better. The first few minutes to perform an activity can be extremely taxing and prone to changing decisions. This setup skips on that buffer time by giving the user pre defined steps to follow and get going.
The empty space below is left for personal messages.
These mats can be made for any activity like sketching, studying or meditation. Other impactful purposes include making these mats for kids, by parents who want their children to develop healthy habits, as simple as arranging clothes and toothbrushes on the mats.
Used by people suffering from depression who need motivation, guidance and assistance in doing the most banal tasks. This can prove to be a great tool.
