AN EXAMPLE OF PRODUCT SOUND DESIGN
Steptone is a step ladder, re imagined by adding sonic cues to extreme treads. An attempt at Product Sound Design by adding an intentional sound to the construction of an object, in order to enhance it’s user experience.
Started by laying out most analog sounds in a typical household(1)—Choosing a staircase during initial sketching(2)—First prototype in the form of a ladder made of rungs using different materials, which enabled a different sound with each tap, thus knowing the position one is on the ladder using only sound cues(3)
After initial prototyping, I built a staircase structure to prototype and test iterations of treads, trying a variety of mechanisms to develop a sound that is effective and solves for the intended purpose.
The final mechanism was developed using spring steel strips and springs, the sound for which is demonstrated below
