AN EXAMPLE OF PRODUCT SOUND DESIGN
Previous
Next
Sound Design has been around for some time now. One of it’s branches is called Product Sound Design. It involves designing the sound an object/action makes, that either elicits an emotion or feeling in the user(Acoustic engineers and designers spend resources to create a signature thud sound, which one can hear while closing the door of an exotic car, that communicates the feeling of luxury) or has a desired function(Microwave Timer).
This is an example of Product Sound Design in practice.
THE PREMISE
As an attempt to use sound as a medium of function in an omnipresent object. I attached sound cues at the uppermost and lowermost rungs of a step ladder, which rang an alert sound when a foot was placed on it. This safety feature attempts to eliminate the problem of knowing when a participant has reached the top or bottom without looking at the steps( which is a major safety hazard, especially while carrying heavy objects and for certain demographics ).
Steel strips were attached to the wooden steps using a custom made mechanism. You can see it in action in the following video.
